Did you just sign up for a teeth whitening session at your trusted Carmel, IN dental clinic? Remember, teeth whitening treatments may take more than just one visit to your dentist to get the results that you want.

Here is an overview of what you can expect during an in-office teeth whitening session:

1. Your dentist will apply a whitening substance/gel that contains hydrogen peroxide. This is the active ingredient that whitens the enamel of our teeth.

2. Before the application, your dentist will apply a gel or shield on your gums in order to protect them from any contact with the hydrogen peroxide solution.

3. The whitening solution may now be applied on your teeth. It needs to stay on for at least 15 minutes during the first application. Several applications of the whitening solution are done in 15-20 minute intervals.

4. The in-office whitening may last for about an hour and you will see immediate results. Depending on the shade and brightness you want, you may need to go for several in-office whitening sessions with your dentist.

Having your teeth whitened at your dentist’s office can take awhile and may require multiple visits. That’s why some patients prefer receiving at-home whitening treatments, so that they don’t have to depend on the clinic schedules of their dentist. The treatment is still planned and supervised by the dentist but it’s obviously more convenient for the patient.

For at-home whitening, consultation with an Indiana top cosmetic dentist would be ideal. He or she can carefully instruct you on how to properly use the whitening kit and custom-fitted mouthpiece usually provided for patients doing at-home whitening treatments. The peroxide solution for at-home whitening is always less concentrated than the ones used for in-office treatments. That’s because your dentist is present during an in-office session and can monitor how the solution is applied.
