Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is administered via prescription medication that is taken the night before, and then an hour before, a dental appointment The medication is designed to induce a drowsy, relaxed feeling without the use of intravenous needles. Before taking an oral sedative, you’ll need to arrange to have a friend or relative take you to and from your procedure because the effects can last for several hours. Many patients who undergo oral sedation report feeling as if they were asleep during their appointments, which is beneficial for patients who typically forgo the dentist due to severe anxiety. Oral sedation is ideal for people who have dental fears, a fear of needles, sensitive teeth, and other dental concerns that might keep them from getting the dental care they need.

IV Sedation

IV sedation is used to administer a combination of sleep-inducing medications intravenously. This form of sedation deeply calms the patient and allows him or her to remain relaxed throughout the entire procedure. A patient undergoing IV sedation will also need to arrange to be driven home following the appointment. It’s important to note that IV sedation does not completely sedate the patient, so you’ll be able to respond to minor commands, but you won’t have any memory of the treatment. If you suffer from extreme dental anxiety and a fear of needles, you may be a good candidate for IV sedation.
